Hi everybody! Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mamas in the room and to the moms we know and love and to everybody who had to do the work of mothering their own damn selves. You’re the freaking best!
Growing up, everyone was constantly gathering in my kitchen to glean my mom’s sage advice. In high school, my friends would come over after school, heat up a can of Amy’s soup (or a bowl of my mom’s amazing vegetable soup- the savory secret? a can or two of diced fire-roasted tomatoes!) and download as much drama with my mom as possible. In some cases it was simply fun- a wise, listening ear who had been in our shoes before- and in some it felt more weighty- my mom serving a compassionate role that people weren’t getting in their own homes. This Mother’s Day, I opted to give my mom a little homework (bad girl!) and asked her to answer some questions from my now grownup friends. Everyone is scattered across the country, including me, but for today let’s all gather in my mom’s kitchen in New York and hear what she has to say.
What was it like being pregnant?
Did it feel different with your second baby?

How does it feel now that your babies are adults?
On feeling “messy” in your twenties (and understanding the phrase):
On discovering your passion & career post-breakup- for context, my mom runs her own very successful interior design business that she started post-divorce after staying home to raise me and my brother through most of our childhoods and I am SO PROUD OF HER!
On making your passion your career:
What do you think people should prioritize investing in for their home?
Thank you mama!
See you next week, my pals! My friend Sarah is in town this weekend and we are having a ball tumbling around the neighborhood and finding all the yard sales that you can only spot with an empty day and an open mind. It’s so nice to enjoy your city through the eyes of a guest! Like a vacation for me too :)
xx Olivia
What a lovely tribute to your warm, creative and so interesting Mom! Love hearing her voice and story. And seeing her obvious legacy in you!
I love this post! I recently made a home video to share with my grandma and she loved it so much. But, I love the audio excerpts and how it brings the story to life :)
